Contact Sheet and Visual Poetry

In 1983, Les Cahiers de la Photographie dedicated a special issue to contact sheets (1). These sheets displayed all the original images from a photographic negative in positive. The contact sheet was used to select and decide which photographs would be enlarged (2) in the darkroom. Additionally, it provided insight into the order in which the images on a film roll were taken, allowing for an analysis of the photographer’s artistic choices and the identification of any lapses or mistakes made during the photographic process. Contact sheets were an intermediate step in the photographic workflow in analogue photography.

That same year, issue 4 of the poetry magazine Clot (3) focused on the lorry theme. I participated in a visual poetry project, using a photographic mosaic (4) with an abstract aesthetic. The contact sheet reveals changes in perspective and the fragmentation of a lorry’s image. Cutting out sections of the contact sheet, I created an analogue mock-up before enlarging the final photographs.

“Enlarger […] In its simplest form, an enlarger consists of a light source, a film carrier and a lens. During operation, the light illuminates a negative or transparency in the holder so that the lens can project an image. Because standard laws of optics apply, increasing the distance between the enlarger and the projected images increases the magnification”.
