The sum of lights

In Light as a Metaphor for Language, I used multiple lights (1) to achieve maximum iconicity in the elements of a photographic composition. Occasionally, I used different light sources to simulate sunrays, as if their sum formed a single light. In this way, I enhanced the textures of the painting on the wall, the silhouettes of some bones in the shadows, and the transparencies of triangular pieces of cellophane paper.

I photographed the scene both with all the lights together and separately, in order to illustrate, through the visual sequence and a composition of sheets (2), the distribution and function of each light source.

From a conceptual perspective, I aimed to visually represent the metaphors of Hitting Rock Bottom (3) and Longing for Life (4). The sliver of light in the darkness of a well symbolised the path to regaining the ability to feel and rediscover new perspectives on life.

Images

  • Photographic still life simulating the bottom of a well. On the back wall, a painting by Toni Casassas that had already been used in other images. On the ground, a very fine sand mixed with pieces of ash. On the sand, in the backlight, the silhouettes of bones and the transparencies of paper triangles can be seen.
