Learning Photography (Pere Formiguera & Jean A. Keim)

In 1975, Pere Formiguera taught at the Grup Taller d’Art Fotogràfic in Barcelona. In his classes, many of us developed an interest in photography, its history, and its visual sequence. One of his favourite books was La photographie et l'homme by the French sociologist Jean A. Keim (1). Under Keim's influence, we explored photography from a humanistic perspective. He characterised communication in the 20th century as a hybrid of image and word.
Through their arguments, authors like Formiguera and Keim guided my interest towards exploring the relationship between photography and art history, as well as the social and textual reflections on the image, visual concepts, and communication.
