The Decisive Moment in the Merging of Images

During the first decade of the 21st century, intelligent image fusion or stitching software (1) evolved rapidly. These programs allow for the creation of panoramas with different types of perspectives (2), using the same series of photographs, or the production of high-resolution images by merging partial photographs (3) of a scene. When choosing the viewpoint, the alignment between the edges of the photographs to be fused and the visual obstructions (4) in the final image must be anticipated. When the main elements of the composition are sufficiently distant from the camera, the necessary photographs can be captured without a tripod or panoramic head (5).

Conceptually, panoramas created through photo fusion represent another way of understanding the decisive moment. When capturing partial images, care must be taken to ensure that moving elements do not appear on the overlapping edges of the photographs, to avoid errors in the stitching software. In digital postproduction, different final compositions can be created by selecting various decisive moments recorded during the capture.

  • The first panorama is the fusion of four photographs in vertical format. Neither the panning head nor the tripod was used to capture the images. Neither the panoramic head nor the tripod was used to capture the images. Stitching software was used to make a panorama with rectilinear perspective and with the picture plane vertical, in order to obtain the verticality of the lines of the buildings in the final image.

  • The second panorama is the same as the first one, only the first picture on the left has been changed, in order to have two different positions of the tram in the final images.
