Composition inside and outside the rule of thirds

The tendency in image construction is the search for balance between the components of composition (1). From a historical perspective and in terms of numerical proportionality, the rule of thirds (2) (a simplified evolution of the golden ratio) (3) has been one of the most widely used methods in design, photography, and cinematography. Nowadays, most cameras and mobile phones come with the option to display a third-grid division, with horizontal and vertical lines projected on the device's viewfinder. The intersection points of these horizontal and vertical lines are visually more attractive (4) to the viewer.

From a visual narrative perspective, we can find examples of composition both within and outside the rule of thirds in TV series as part of the visual language (5). In the series Breaking Bad (7), a classical composition inside the rule of thirds is used to show the interaction between the two main characters. In Mr. Robot (7), the protagonist is often placed outside the points of interest defined by the rule of thirds, visually depicting his emotional instability.
