W. Eugene Smith (1) is one of the relevant authors of photographic Humanism. In his reports, Smith portrayed his ideals about humanity (2). He empathised with people and became involved in the causes they defended. He photographed both the positive and negative aspects of life, both hope and denunciation.

Smith excelled at image composition and lighting. He controlled the distribution of lights (3) and shadows in the framing, using both natural light (in outdoor spaces) and artificial lighting (in indoor scenes).

    “Smith voulant montrer les membres déformés de Tomoko, la mère suggéra de la photographier pendant qu’elle lui donnait ses ablutions. Smith compléta l’éclairage naturel de la pièce sombre où la jeune fille prenait son bain a l’aide de deux petites de flash électronique jouant sur les ombres. À sa demande, la mère souleva légèrement les jambes contrefaites de sa fille hors de l’eau. Lors d’une exposition dont il devina aussitôt que ce serait la définitive, un rectangle de lumière, reflet d’une fenêtre dans l’eau, vint encadrer avec précision une des mains difformes de Tomoko. Les références au Christ crucifié sont évidentes; au fil des années, bon nombre de gens ont comparé cette photographie à la Pieta de Michel-Ange”.
