In the 1930s, the F.S.A. (1) (Farm Security Administration) was one of the US government's programmes to combat the Great Depression. From the visual narrative, it was a photographic project aimed at documenting areas economically (2) impoverished by falling agricultural prices and the drought affecting their land.

This initiative was led by the economist Stryker of Columbia University and involved many photographers, including W. Evans, D. Lange, R. Lee, A. Rothstein, and others. At the end of the project (3), the images were delivered to the Library of Congress. However, the humanism and iconic message of these photographs were not always accepted, and many of them were censored.

    “Après l’entrée en guerre des Etats-Unis en décembre 1941, le budget F.S.A. fut encore réduit et, à la fin de 1941, la Section Historique était finalement rattachée au Service d’information des Armées. Stryker ne disposait plus alors que d’un personnel minimum et, quand il démissionna lui-même l’année suivante, la section disparut.
