Kevin Lynch (1) classified the elements of the image of the city into five categories: paths, edges, districts, nodes, and landmarks. He defined the public representation of a locality as the superimposition of numerous individual images. Historical photographers of urban spaces have preserved our memories of the past, and with digital imaging, millions of photographs are uploaded daily from cities via mobile phones to the “cloud.”

In the 21st century, the digital image technique has allowed new printing systems to generate large format photographic copies on any type of material. In addition to being a tool for capturing images, photography became a new component on the walls of urban spaces (2). The collaboration of the EGM (3) company with the FCAVV (4) projects promoted the idea of photo walls.

The Walls of the River Mèder (5) project was born from the idea of transforming the edges of the river, a barrier between two districts, into a path for walking among the visual memories of the past. The Walls of mNACTEC (6) was created to rehabilitate the back walls of the museum (an old textile factory) and as a historical reflection, to visually explain the space and activities in the old building.

Images

  • Photomontage of the project Murs del Mèder (Walls of the river Mèder). It has a J. Palmerola image from 1920, in the same place where it was made. A year later, the printed photograph was installed, as a pilot test, in the same place where it can be seen in the photomontage.
