The Comic and the Social Sciences (Carlos Sporttorno & Guillermo Abril)

Since the end of the 19th century, photography has served as a visual tool for social denunciation (1). Digital photography has remained a mass medium for visualising subjects and social events, provided the captured content is not altered.

Digital tools enable the numerical modification of the image's formal elements without altering its meaning. Spottorno and Abril (2) also utilise video and comics to showcase their photographs. La Grieta (3) is a visual sequence in which the profiles of the subjects and the reduction of the levels of iconicity through digital processing have been enhanced to align with the narrative and aesthetics of the comic. It presents a story described from the perspective of iconic humanism, featuring an impeccable formal structure and compelling content. The characters and settings are not fictional; the people, sea scenes, and concrete barriers are real.
