The vision of a scream causes restlessness. It conveys to us the inner gaze of those who created the image. Edward Munch (1) painted Skrik out of anguish, but the “scream” can also express pain, rage, or “JA N’HI HA PROU” (enough is enough).

The screaming mouth's minimalism creates the main point of attraction of the image, regardless of the artistic technique used or the levels of iconicity. From this point, the rest of the composition's elements are organised, what Rudolf Arnheim calls the concentric system (2).

The dynamic contrast (3) of an image serves as a visual strategy that accentuates meaning, particularly in the case of the scream, enhancing the strength of this effect. This can be achieved through various means, such as colour contrast, black and white contrast, or lighting contrast.
